This morning, we will drive north, passing through strawberry fields and cattle ranches to reach the Poas Volcano National Park, located 2708 meters above sea level. As we gain elevation, you will notice how the vegetation and temperatures change until we reach the summit. On a clear day, we’ll be blessed with stunning views of the volcano and the surrounding mountains. This afternoon, we’ll visit the artisan town of Sarchi, where you will have a fascinating view into history, craftsmanship, and art as you move through the different stages of construction and finishing of Costa Rica’s most authentic National Symbol: the Oxcart.
Day 3: Guayabo National Monument
Visit Costa Rica’s most important archaeological site: Guayabo National Monument. Discovered in the late 1800s, this site is home to ruins dating back to between 1000 BC to 1400 AD. Just 10% of the site has been excavated, leaving many artifacts still yet to be discovered. Your local guide will help you uncover some of the mysteries of this historical site while you are immersed in the surrounding biodiversity, rich with tropical flora and fauna.
Day 4: Aquiares Community
Today, you will experience the heart of sustainable agriculture and rural charm. Set amidst the rolling hills of Turrialba, the Aquiares community is renowned for its thriving coffee plantation where you can learn about this region’s rich history of coffee cultivation and learn about the organic farming practices that sustainably produce some of the world’s finest beans. Explore the surrounding coffee fields on foot or horseback and visit the hidden Aquiares waterfall for a refreshing dip.
Day 5: South Caribbean Coast
This morning, we are traveling east to experience the vibrant culture of the South Caribbean Coast. Not only will you find some of the best beaches and wildlife encounters here, but this part of the coast will also surround you with cuisine, music, and traditions that you will not find elsewhere. Even for those who have traveled in Costa Rica before, arriving in the Caribbean feels like coming to another country.
Day 6: Cahuita National Park
Cahuita National Park demonstrates how community engagement is key to the sustainable development of protected areas in Costa Rica. Park rangers and community members share responsibilities in the management of the National Park. You’ll also find the most preserved coral reef on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica here, a perfect spot for snorkeling. Enjoy delicious tropical fruits on the beach and hike along the coastal trails, spotting monkeys, sloths, birds, poison dart frogs, iguanas, and more.
