Hidden Natural Wonders of Costa Rica

9 Days | San Gerardo de Dota - Turrialba - Sarapiqui - Boca Tapada

Itinerary for Naturalists in Costa Rica

Day 1: Arrive in Costa Rica

Welcome to our beautiful country! Meet your private transfer service, rental car, or Serendipity guide at the San José airport. You’ll ascend to the cloud forest, passing through scenic mountainous terrain, to your peaceful lodging in San Gerardo de Dota.

Day 2: Coffee & Quetzals in San Gerardo de Dota

Join an unforgettable early morning walk in the Valley of San Gerardo de Dota. This is where you will have the opportunity to spot the Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno), the sacred bird of the Aztec and Maya Cultures. Our experienced guide will lead you to the best spots for observing this magnificent bird. In the afternoon, discover why this region is known for having some of the best coffee in Costa Rica. Visit a local plantation to learn all about what it takes to make a great cup of the world’s most popular hot beverage.

Day 3: Uncovering Hidden Natural Wonders of Guayabo

Today, we will travel to the region of Turrialba to explore the mysteries of one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Costa Rica, the Guayabo National Monument. Veiled in the shadow of the Turrialba Volcano, like a mythical “lost city” from a storybook, lies the remains of an ancient city. Walking among the ancient ruins and learning about the seemingly endless list of mysteries and unanswered questions is an experience that will leave you both fascinated and curious to know more!

Day 4: Hiking Turrialba Volcano & Organic Farm

The active Turrialba Volcano dominates the northern highlands of Turrialba County. On this 4km or 10km hike, you’ll discover the unique burnt forest, lava trails, and canyons that surround the crater. Aside from the geology, one can sometimes spot bird species (Volcano Hummingbird, Snowcap, Green Thorntail, Quetzal) as well as highland Paramo scrub growth and giant-leaved Poor Man’s Umbrella (Gunnera insignis) plants. In the afternoon, enjoy an authentic farm-to-table experience. Learn about efficient, organic agriculture as the friendly owners will give you a great tour of their project and enjoy a delicious dinner.

Day 5: Tirimbina Rainforest Reserve

Today, you will travel north to the region of Sarapiquí to visit the Tirimbina Biological Reserve. During this tour, you will be taken through Tirimbina´s rainforest across the longest hanging bridge in the region to a traditional cacao plantation. You will have the opportunity to taste the cacao bean at its different stages in the process of making chocolate and also be involved with different preparations of it, so make sure your appetite is ready!

Day 6: La Selva Biological Station

La Selva Biological Station is the principal station for studies and education in Costa Rica, situated on 1,600 hectares of old-growth and new-growth tropical wet forest. A quick list of biodiversity is described at the Station: 2,080 varieties of plants, 420 species of trees, 467 species of birds, and approximately 700 species of ants. A resident Naturalist Guide will relay the importance of La Selva to Tropical Conservation and lead you on a walk through the rainforest, spotting wildlife and giving insight into their natural history in addition to plants, fungi, insects, and more. Be sure to bring your binoculars and camera, although your guide will have a spotting scope for your viewing and getting great photos.

Day 7: Maquenque Nature Reserve in Boca Tapada

For the last leg of your journey, you’ll discover the hidden natural wonders of Boca Tapada. Only accessible by boat, your eco-lodge is situated within the Maquenque Nature Reserve with a choice of lodging in bungalows or treehouses. This evening, armed with flashlights and with the help of your knowledgeable guides, we will tour the reserve, as the nocturnal animals of the forest come alive all around us. Frogs start to croak, sleepy animals high in the trees begin to stir. You´ll be amazed as the cacophony of sounds grows and grows with each passing moment the sun descends.

Day 8: Nature Float by Raft or Kayak

Today, you will have an up-close Nature experience either by raft or kayak. There is a wide variety of wildlife in the Gallery (or Riparian) Forests along the rivers in the area and a quiet float is a great way to get close and have a good look. It’s common to see Spectacled caiman, Green iguanas, monkeys, different types of herons, Wood storks, flycatchers and warblers, Anhingas, and sometimes even the elusive Sungrebe. Your guide is expert at spotting and pointing out the wildlife and you will learn about their natural history, so take time to observe and photograph the beauty surrounding you.
