Sergio Calvo meets Serendipity Adventures
Q: How many years have you worked with Serendipity Adventures?
I’ve been with Serendipity for almost ten years now. I can’t remember the exact number, but I know I started right around the time the new office was inaugurated. My first day was in December before the season officially began. Lota and the team held a meeting with all the guides, and we had a mini adventure race. My team won, of course! That was how my journey with Serendipity began, and it’s been an amazing ride ever since.
Q: How did you first hear about Serendipity Adventures?
My brother, José Miguel, was working for Serendipity at the time. He told me about it, and that’s how I joined. I was already familiar with Serendipity, but José Miguel helped me take that first step. I started with canyoning and gradually took on more activities as I grew into the role.
Q: What were you doing before joining Serendipity?
I was already guiding before I joined Serendipity. I worked with other companies around Turrialba, offering tours at places like Guayabo National Monument and coffee farms. I’ve always been connected to this region, and it’s where I started my guiding career.
Growing up in Sitio Mata, Turrialba
Q: Tell us about your connection to Turrialba and Sitio Mata.
Turrialba is home. I’ve lived in Sitio Mata my entire life, and it’s a small, quiet community where everyone knows each other. My house is on our family farm, and it’s so private and peaceful that I often leave my car or house unlocked—it’s that safe here. I love the tranquility, the friendly people, and the connection to nature. I’ll never leave because there’s nowhere else like it for me.
Q: What makes Turrialba so special to you?
It’s the combination of the people and the natural beauty. Turrialba is less crowded than other popular destinations, and it still feels authentic. The private spaces, the small communities, and the rich history make it unique. Plus, the area offers such a variety of activities—from canyoning to coffee tours—that it’s a guide’s dream.
Q: You started with canyoning. What’s the story behind that?
Yes, canyoning was one of my first activities. The location that we use today is part of my family’s property. As kids, we used to climb the waterfalls and explore the area, so it’s been in my blood from the beginning. It’s amazing to see how it’s become a part of Serendipity’s offerings.
What makes guiding with Serendipity so special
Q: Do you remember your first trip with Serendipity?
Oh, absolutely! My first trip was unforgettable. It was a multi-day adventure starting in Turrialba and ending in Guanacaste. One of the clients on that trip was a bit intense, which made it more challenging, but I learned so much. Every trip since then has been different, but that first one will always stand out.
Q: What’s your favorite activity to do with Serendipity?
In the beginning, I was all about the adventure—canyoning, zip lining, and those adrenaline-filled activities. But over the years, I’ve developed a love for nature-based experiences. I enjoy guiding clients through the forest, pointing out wildlife, and sharing my knowledge of plants and animals. Adventure is still a favorite, but nature has taken the top spot for me now.
Q: What makes Serendipity different from other companies?
Serendipity is completely unique. The flexibility we have with trips is so different. Every itinerary is customized to the clients’ preferences, and we can adapt as we go. If someone wants to change plans mid-trip, we can do that. It’s not like other companies where you have to stick to a strict schedule. This flexibility allows both the guides and the clients to truly enjoy the experience.
New places and new faces
Q: Do you have a favorite trip or client experience?
I’ve had so many great experiences, but one family from last year stands out. They were so kind and friendly, and we clicked right away. Even their kids, who were teenagers, were engaged and enthusiastic. Instead of being on their phones, they were talking, laughing, and enjoying every moment. We built a connection that made the trip unforgettable.
Q: What would you say to someone considering Costa Rica as a travel destination?
Costa Rica is perfect for people looking for something different. Many travelers now want to avoid the crowded, well-known spots like Manuel Antonio. They’re seeking unique experiences and less-explored areas. That’s where Serendipity comes in—we take people off the beaten path and show them the real Costa Rica. Whether it’s a secluded beach or a quiet mountain town, there’s something here for everyone.
Q: What’s your next trip with Serendipity?
My next trip starts tomorrow. It’s a seven-day adventure to Fortuna and Monteverde with a solo traveler. Every trip is unique, even if you’re visiting the same places. The weather, the people, and the experiences are always different, and that’s what makes this job so exciting. I’m looking forward to seeing what this trip has in store!
